Is It Time for Website Redesign?
5 Signs Your Site Might Be Holding You Back
Your website doesn’t need to be the talk of the town, but it needs to be working for your business.
What exactly does that mean? Your website should make it clear to people what you do before they even scroll. It should be easy to use. And above all, it should look like it belongs to a company that’s active, trustworthy, and worth hiring. If your site isn’t doing those things or if you're losing leads, a redesign is worth considering.
Based on conversations and website evaluations we've had with clients, here are the most common signs we see when a website needs a refresh:
1. Your site feels outdated
You don’t need to chase trends, but your website should look current. A site that feels five or ten years old can quietly hurt your credibility. Even if people can’t explain why, their subconscious can make that determination in less than 3 seconds.
What are elements that often make a site look outdated? Too many gradients or effects, small fonts or cluttered layouts, and complicated menus that don’t translate well to mobile.
A modern design doesn’t mean trendy; modern means clear, easy to use, and trustworthy.
2. It doesn’t work well on phones
Have you looked at Google Analytics lately? Most of your visitors are coming from a mobile device. If your site isn’t responsive (i.e., it doesn’t adapt well to different screen sizes), then it’s already behind.
This isn’t just about appearance. It’s about function. Are buttons easy to tap? Are text and images sized proportionally? Do pages load quickly without issues?
If the answer is no, people will leave fast. Why does this matter? Because Google factors load speed and bounce rate in your search engine rankings.
3. It's slow
Slow load times frustrate users - especially on mobile - making it one of the easiest ways to lose a lead. We can't stress this enough: website performance not only affects usability but also search rankings.
There are free tools out there to measure page load time, and some of them like PageSpeed Insights will help indicate if your site is being bogged down by oversized images, bloated code or old templates, or hosting that isn’t optimized.
A redesign can help streamline your site’s structure and speed things up across the board.
4. It's hard to use
Good design isn’t just a matter of looks. Good design incorporates functionality as well as user expectation and behavior.
Can people find what they need without digging? Are calls to action obvious and well-placed? Are pages organized in a way that makes sense?
If your site is confusing, overwhelming, or just poorly structured, it’s not helping your business. It might even be working against you. The harder it is for people to use your site, the more likely they are to leave and never return.
5. It's not converting
Do you have digital marketing efforts in place to get users to your website? Maybe you're satisfied with your website traffic, but if you’re not getting leads, signups, or sales from your website, then it isn’t doing its job.
The goal of a website isn't merely to have a place for your contact information to live. (You can achieve that with a Google Business Profile.) Your website should be your best sales agent.
Does your website attract the right audience, guide visitors through the sales process, and drive conversions?
A well-designed site guides people toward action. It builds trust, provides clarity, and makes the process as smooth as possible. If your site isn’t doing that, design might be part of the problem.
Final Thoughts
If some of this sounds familiar, it doesn’t mean your site is a total loss. But it may need a fresh start, or at least a strategic update.
A thoughtful website redesign can fix technical issues, improve usability, and align your site with your goals. The key is to make sure that the redesign is not purely a visual upgrade but also flexible, functional, and friendly.
